Originally published in 1975, At the Mill was Patty's Hall's brainchild when, on her first visit to the Mill, she was struck by how much folk music history had been made there and also by the fact that history was, in fact, still very much being made. With her folklorist hat firmly atop her head, Patty undertook the documenting of Sweet's Mill, and the result was a handcrafted little book, from the hands and hearts of Sweet's Millers. The outpouring of art and song and poetry and prose, gathered from folk music publications and dozens of Sweet's Mill regulars, reveals the passion and depth-of-feeling for this impossibly otherworldly music retreat tucked away in the low Sierras above Fresno.
Contributors to At the Mill include Virgil and Edith Byxbe, Lou and Virginia Curtiss, Kathy Larisch, Biggs Tinker, Sam Chatmon, Sue Levine, Jim Ringer, Faith Petric, Otis Pierce, Patty Hall, and many many others!
Only a limited number of these little tan books remain, and when they're sold, they're history. Copies are a little worse for storage wear (after all, they're 29 years old!) but well-worth the $8.00 price. Don't be left out in owning an important piece of California folkie history.
