Yet, mention the name Johnny Gruelle--the whimsical creator of America’s favorite ragdolls--and most draw a blank. Few know about the modest, multi-talented man who created Ann and Andy, or that his career reached far beyond his well-known rag dolls and storybooks. "Through the Eyes of a Child: The Whimsical World of Johnny Gruelle" is a slide presentation by Gruelle biographer Patricia Hall. The 25 minute show chronicles Gruelle’s life as an artist, writer, and toy designer; highlights his gift for combining the old with the new in his dolls and stories; and showcases his expert ability to narrate through both prose and artwork. Patty also discusses the origins of the two Raggedys and what makes them special, and shares some fascinating legends about Ann and Andy that reveal the importance of folklore in Gruelle's work. Among Patty’s slides are scarce and little-known works and illustrations by Gruelle, as well as rare photographs. Attendees are encouraged to bring Raggedy or Gruelle items from their own collections to share during a discussion and sharing session that follows the program. MEET-AND-GREET AND BOOKSIGNING An integral part of Patty’s programs is the informal “Meet-and-Greet” that follows each of her presentations—a special time when participants can visit with each other and with Patty.
